Fresh air, sun and gentle body motion all help maintain a healthy glow, but too much can cause skin damage.
Even elephants and rhinoceros, with much tougher skin than humans, are known to regularly cover their hair-less bodies with a mineral mask to protect it from the sun!
Unfortunately, many sunscreens contain toxic chemicals and can increase our chance of skin cancer.
So at The Bike In My Life we went in search of the world’s best natural beauty secrets, and we discovered oil!
Plant or ‘Dry’ oils have been used for their nourishing and protective qualities for thousands of years.
These light-textured oils, derived from plants, dry on the skin and leave a non-greasy protective layer and some have an SPF of up to 50!
Plant oils with sun-shielding properties:
- Raspberry seed oil (SPF 30-50)
- Sesame oil (SPF 30)
- Hempseed oil (exact SPF unknown, but helps deflect harmful UV rays without affecting vitamin D absorption. It also helps repair damaged/dry skin)
- Wheat germ oil (SPF 20)
- Shea butter (SPF 6-10)
- Coconut oil (SPF 4-10)
- Macadamia oil (SPF 6)
- Jojoba oil (SPF 4)
- Avocado oil (SPF 4)
- Blank Seed oil (exact SPF unknown)
- Argon oil (exact SPF unknown – Berber women have used Argan oil for centuries to protect and nourish their skin from the harsh desert conditions in which they live).
Other oils that have an SPF rating of 4-10 are Cottonseed, Peanut and Olive oil, but they are heavy oils that don’t dry on the skin and so are not suited for daily use.
You can buy most of these dry oils online or at health stores.
Happy Bicycle Travels!
